  • The Level 1 TESOL course (70 hours)
  • The Level 1 TESOL course for teaching young learners (95 hours)

Who are these courses for?

The Level 1 TESOL course (70 hours) is for GVN volunteers who wish to start teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). Whether you are completely new to teaching or are already a teacher and wish to learn more about TESOL methods, this course is designed to be of practical use to you in the classroom.

The Level 1 TESOL course for teaching young learners (95 hours) adds on key specialist study areas and material for teaching from Kindergarten through to Teenagers, in a wide variety of settings.

Both courses lead to the accredited Preliminary Certificate of TESOL Distance Education Courses, awarded by (ACTDEC - the Accrediting Council for TESOL Distance Education Courses). The 95 hour course also adds on a special Teaching English to Young Learners Certificate from Global English.

All Global English tutors are highly qualified TESOL teachers with international experience and are on hand to offer help or advice during your course.

Course enrollees should either have a degree in any subject or university level entrance qualifications ('A' levels or equivalent). But consideration is also be given to mature applicants who possess significant life experience e.g. in teaching, business, languages or with young people. Global English welcomes applicants whose first language is not English. However, non-native English speakers should possess a high level of written and spoken English and/or English language qualifications, such as C.A.E. or C.P.E. or IELTS.

Course Contents

Both courses are divided into 4 modules and include the specialist CD-Rom 'Train to Teach English'. The 70 hour course looks at teaching English both to young learners and adults, with an emphasis on helping you in practical ways in your classroom. So you'll cover the practical elements of teaching, like classroom management (group work and pair work, discipline, correction and classroom sensitivity) as well as the key theory needed for teaching the basic skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. There are comprehensive sections on English Grammar and unlimited tutorial support as you progress.

The course is graded by continuous assessment. There are short tasks and in-depth activities throughout the course with an exam question at the end of module 4. Your tutor will mark your answers and is available if you require any further help. Your final award is based on your performance across all 4 modules and upon successful completion you'll gain a recognised ACTDEC certificate.

Course duration

Most Global Volunteer Network trainees work their way through their chosen course in around 2-4 months, although you set the pace of your studies. 6 months is the maximum duration, but this is extendable, if required, for a small extra fee. And as with all Global English courses, you can complete as quickly as you wish, so completion inside a month is possible.
