...about her experience while volunteering in New Zealand.
Oct 10, 2003 - "Today was fulfilling, but a long, hard days work on the Kapiti Coast. We worked with Fergus and Brayden on a restoration project located on the cliffside. Spectacular views of the coastline and Kapiti Island, and the quintessential NZ of 'land of sheep & big green pastures'. We tubed and staked seedlings all along the project area to protect them from the elements (weather and predators) so they'll grow into big trees someday :). The plants, which are expected to grow about 5' in the next 5 years, with rapid growth thereafter, will create a windbreak and also help to keep the cliffs from eroding."
Oct 15, 2003 – "Just spent 3 days/2 nights camping and doing work at Rimutaka National Park. It was different and interesting for sure, but also fun – ‘Predator Control’… Day 2 I woke up around 7:00 a.m. and had a moment for myself washing down by the river – very invigorating and peaceful… after a quick breakfast, John, Vicky and I were off to clear and reset the traps. I think we caught 5-6 possum… sad, but a part of life; have to remember the ‘big picture’ – predator control to help preserve and allow regeneration of vegetation and increasing other wildlife, in this case native birds such as the Kingfisher and the Tui… the thought of a silent forest – with no birds singing – saddens me, so I try to stay positive (about the work). Plus John (Rush) is a hoot to work with and actually made the whole experience tolerable."
