June 2010

E-NEWSLINK

Hi,

"BE MORE CONCERNED WITH YOUR CHARACTER THAN YOUR REPUTATION, BECAUSE YOUR CHARACTER IS WHAT YOU REALLY ARE, WHILE YOUR REPUTATION IS MERELY WHAT OTHERS THINK YOU ARE,"

This is one of many quotes from Coach John Wooden whose passing on Friday 4th June 2010 silenced the world of basketball. John Wooden was known as the best coach to ever mentor the game of college basketball in the US. To basketball fans across the world, he was more than a coach; he was a metaphor for the game and an inspiration of well being. He touched basketball fans both near and far, and it’s been said that if you followed all of Wooden’s lessons in basketball and applied them to life, you’d have no choice but to succeed.

You see Coach Wooden was a better human being than he was a coach. I would think most of us would want to be associated with a man who epitomized the human spirit. He cared more about winning lives than winning games. But games he did win; he won 10 titles in 12 years, including seven in a row. 88 consecutive wins and four undefeated seasons. They are part of his legacy, but only part. The greater legacy is the respect of his players, his peers, and the dignity he gave to a game and his desire that athletes he influenced be the best they can be both on and off the Basketball court.

Wooden’s example emphasises the wonderful opportunity that sport provides to influence people around us and make a positive difference. In this E-Newslink you will read about our ‘Make Sport Your Mission’ course. New Zealand young people desperately need positive direction and healthy role models. Our goal is to find ordinary people with a love for sport and create opportunities for them to make a difference and put their passion to good use. Consider doing ‘Make Sport Your Mission’ yourself, or perhaps pass this on to someone who you think maybe interested.

MAKE SPORT YOUR MISSION COURSE

Sport is a huge part of kiwi society. However, we have been slow in picking up the ball in developing ways to effectively embrace the opportunities sport provides to change lives and positively influence our Kiwi sports culture. ‘Make Sport Your Mission’ is a Christian focused course which explores and unpacks issues of Sport, Faith and God from a NZ perspective and provides an ideal opportunity for those who are 'sports mad' to discover how they can make a positive difference through sport. Topics covered include: Sport as Mission, Inner Fitness, Understanding NZ sports culture and associated issues, trends and opportunities.

Make Sport Your Mission is offered as either a One day workshop (Sat June 26, 9am - 4pm), OR Four evening workshops (Mon July 5, 12, 19, 26, 7.30pm - 9pm).

Apart from the satisfaction of completing the challenge most the participants also received some magnificent prizes including a bike donated by VIC Cycles, Gym memberships and local restaurant and boutique vouchers.
