Ignite Sport

December 2009

E-NEWSLINK

Hi,

2009 was a year for Ignite Sport to move 'to the next level'. The year has provided that opportunity and we are pleased to be able to share with you in this E-Newslink some of the projects we have been able to complete over the last little while. It is been great having Steve Willis on staff this year and along with a number of great volunteers, Ignite has been able to make a difference in our schools and community. We recently finished two programmes in local schools involving 70 young people. To see them make positive choices both in their sport and in life 'off the field' makes every little effort we make so worthwhile. We are again reminded of the wonderful opportunity sport presents to encourage and positively influence New Zealand young people.

Three weeks ago we sat down and began planning for 2010. A solid foundation has been laid over the last two years that will enable the work of Ignite to grow further. We are in the process of developing projects in other schools in the Wellington region and will progress further our 'Make Sport Your Mission' course, encouraging even more people to engage strategically as sports volunteers. Add to this the growing number of opportunities people will have to connect with Ignite through sports camps, events and tournaments. We also look forward to playing a part in serving the 2011 Rugby World Cup and assist with the development of Sports Chaplaincy opportunities in our region.

We look forward to sharing more with you next year and appreciate your willingness to be part of the journey. Thank you to all who support our work financially and/or through your interest and ongoing encouragement. We pray and trust that you will have a great Christmas and a happy New Year!

On Track

ONTRACK 2009

We have just completed our third ONTRACK sports academy at Hutt Valley High School. Fifty Year 10 students were selected to participate in this three day in-school academy programme aimed to help young athletes maximize their potential in both sport and life.

This year's programme included presentations from Niniwa Roberts (NZ Black Sticks Striker and two times Olympian) and Billy Graham from the Naenae Boxing Academy. Practical workshops included career opportunities in sport and fitness testing with Weltec staff, sports specific coaching and sessions at Lifestyle Health and Fitness. Interactive learning sessions were facilitated by Ignite staff designed to develop balance, character, inner fitness, goal setting and identify barriers to performance.

All students received their own detailed workbooks and each graduated with a certificate of achievement.

In 2010 Ignite plans to develop the ONTRACK Academy concept further and plans are well underway to deliver programmes in other schools in our region. If you would like to find out more about ONTRACK and explore opportunities to implement it in your school, please contact Steve Willis at the Ignite office Ph 9202204

IGNITE SOCCER CAGE

We have introduced a new sports attraction to Wellington. 'Cage Soccer' is a played one on one in an enclosed steel cage. Games are fast and furious and last no longer than a minute. Teams of up to five can play, tagging each other in and out of the cage. The Ignite Soccer Cage phenomenon is developing huge interest and following wherever it features. To date it has been a regular feature at the Westpac Trust Stadium at The Phoenix home games as well as the recent Hutt Christmas Spectacular and of course at our own Ignition sports tournament.

Ignite Sport would like to thank the following businesses for sponsoring the cage and helping make it a reality: Hutt City Professionals, Fine Signs, Bank Shoes, Vogel, Motors, BR Contractors, and Action Indoor Sports.

The Ignite Soccer Cage is available for hire: A variety of community and church groups have also hired the Cage for their own functions. Contact Kevin Goldsbury at the Ignite Office (PH 9202204) if you would like to enquire about its availability.

Sports included Soccer, Netball, Cricket, Volleyball, Bowls, Table tennis and 1v1 Cage Soccer. NAENAE INTERMEDIATE PROGRAMME

During term four we had the privilege of working with twenty Year 8 students from Naenae Intermediate. We spent seven weeks together exploring a range of sport, fitness, lifeskills and health related topics. Mission

MAKE SPORT YOUR MISSION

Fifteen people with a passion for sport recently completed our very first 'Make Sport Your Mission' course. The course aims to encourage and support sports volunteers to actively engage in their community using the power of sport to make a difference. Ignite plans to run a second course in 2010 which will be promoted to church and community groups in the New Year.

Contact Steve Willis at the Ignite Office (PH 9202204) if you would like to receive further information about up and coming courses.

Christmas Spectacular

BROTHER CHRISTMAS SPECTACULAR

30,000 people basked in the Fraser Park sun at this year's Brother Christmas Spectacular. Ignite Sport was selected as one of three charities benefiting from the proceeds from the event. We were also able to support the event through setting up and running the Ignite Soccer Cage, selling glow sticks and distributing programmes. A special thanks to Hutt Impact for their ongoing commitment and support to Ignite Sport Trust and our work in the community.

KiwiRun
