We are pleased to announce that our Honduras program has two new projects available. Volunteers now have the chance to work on conservation projects with manatees and iguanas.
Manatee Project
On this project volunteers will work at a reserve dedicated to the conservation of the endangered Manatee. The refuge is located on the Caribbean coast around 35 kilometres from the port town of La Ceiba. The foundation of the refuge came to be as a direct response to the depleting number of Manatees within the zone. Manatees are an endangered species and up to 10% of the total global population can be found within this reserve. In addition, the refuge is also home to a vast number of different species of birds, over 200 in total, and a plethora of other animals and reptiles such as White-faced monkeys, Jaguars, Howlers, Boa Constrictors, Crocodiles, Alligators, Iguanas and a vast array of fish life.
Iguana Project
Situated off the coast of Honduras on the Caribbean island of Utila, volunteers on this project will work at an Iguana Centre which is dedicated to the protection and breeding of the Utila Iguana. The centre was founded in 1994 and is vital for the on-going protection of the endangered species, which is threatened by unsustainable development of the mangroves and beaches, over-hunting, as well as by increasing pollution. As a result, the work in the iguana sanctuary has become even more important and the contribution by volunteers is vital to the on-going preservation of this species.
