At the end of each year, GVN’s partner organisations review their program fees. For 2008, the Ghana Community, Vietnam Teaching and Tanzania programs all have increased their program fees due to the increased cost of running their organizations. Please note that all of those who have paid their application fee prior to 1 January 2008 will pay the program fees for 2007.

Gwen Jones, a past volunteer on our Tanzania program, certainly had an unplanned experience during her volunteer placement. While volunteering at a class for children with special needs at Kawe School in North Dar Es Salaam, she met a six year old girl named Tatu Shabani. As Gwen watched the children play, she noticed that Tatu would fall face down in the mud every time she attempted to run with the others Tatu suffers from Bilateral Club Feet, a condition where both feet turn inwards. Although Tatu has learned to walk on the outside of her inwardly rotated feet, as her body grows her poorly developed feet will no longer be able to cope with her body weight. The hospitals Gwen visited in Tanzania had three child patients to each bed; due to this lack of resources and overcrowding, any operations Tatu had in Tanzania would likely be unsuccessful, similar to the foot operation Tatu had as a baby which failed to correct the problem.
The Global Volunteer Network currently has opportunities to help develop communities through our partner organization in Tanzania, to build a better future in Sub-Saharan Africa. Volunteers have the opportunity to be involved in a variety of different projects described below.
Volunteers will have the opportunity to work at various arts, music and dance projects, schools, centres for orphaned and vulnerable children, as well as a women’s center/school. They may also choose to work doing computer training or small business help. Please note that all projects require volunteers who are self-starters and can conduct their daily activities with minimal supervision. Specific daily schedules and activities will be determined between volunteers and their team leader upon arrival. As none of the Tanzania projects are full-time, volunteers will take part in a flexible schedule, which includes some or all activities offered by the program:

The Tanzania program is located in the costal town of Bagamoyo. Volunteers have the opportunity to be involved in a variety of work through the provision of education and training to orphaned children and street kids.
Orphanage Program: Tanzania, as with all Sub Saharan African countries, is badly affected by poverty and HIV/AIDS. The number of orphans and street children is growing and so the need for volunteers is ever increasing. Volunteers take on the role of mother, father, sister, and brother. There are opportunities to teach the children basic life skills, and to emotionally support and counsel them, and help them with feeding, cooking and cleaning, depending on your skills and experiences. The goal of this program is provide the children with a normal life and to make sure they are happy and enjoying themselves.
Teaching Program: Tanzanian schools are heavily under resourced. A lack of teachers is one of the barriers preventing children from getting an education. Volunteers have the opportunity to teach at pre-school, primary and secondary school level. In pre-school children learn the alphabet and basic concepts like colour, shapes, and sizes. Subjects taught at primary and secondary schools include English, maths, science, and basic computer skills (only in schools where computers are available).
