Announcing a new project in the South Africa Youth Program:

1:36pm 13 March 2009
Filed under: GVN, News, Programs, South Africa

Teach in Soweto

Volunteer teaching assistants can help teach core subjects, such as English, mathematics, life skills, and science. Volunteers with varying skills will be able to help in areas of academic and skill development through mentoring and tutoring activities.

Currently there are schools in South Africa that struggle to meet their achievement goals, achieve specific skill sets, and motivate young people. There are many factors contributing to this challenge from high student to teacher ratio, lack of resources, and most important history.

Volunteers will work at Thulasizwe Primary which caters for Grades 5, 6 and 7. Thulasizwe is a public primary school under section 21 and is located in an under-privileged community. The school caters to needy learners coming from poor communities. Thulasizwe has 80% of learners who live in squatter camp settlements and they travel a distance of 15km to come to school.

There will be additional opportunities for tutoring, career development, and organizing extracurricular activities for students.

South Africa Update

5:16pm 18 December 2008

There has been many reports over the past weeks regarding Cholera spreading from Zimbabwe to the South African Border region and this has prompted us to provide an update to our Volunteers. As we know, Cholera is water borne disease that is caused by drinking contaminated water or food. It is easily curable, however because of the added circumstances of the Zimbabwe situation, many are infected without basic care. Our South Africa Youth program is based in Thohoyandou Greater Area, which is 170 kilometres away from the Zimbabwe border. This area does not share water with Zimbabwe or use water coming from rivers flowing through Zimbabwe. South Africa has its own irrigation and water reserve mechanisms to serve their communities. The water supply in Thohoyandou area is safe and of high quality, and bottled water is available from all supermarkets and shops. The area has never had a Cholera case in the past 20 years. Should you have any questions, please contact us at info@volunteer.org.nz.

New Volunteer Project in South Africa

12:57pm 1 October 2004

We are pleased to announce our newest project, a wildlife program in South Africa. Volunteers will assist in the rehabilitation of native species and help to maintain the habitat into which they are released.

The program is located in Gauteng Province, 45 minutes from Johannesburg. The project area is approximately 5,000 hectares, located on a rare veld (bush) type called bankenveld, recognised for its high biodiversity. Less than 1% of bankenveld is conserved under formal government programs, so this private conservation initiative is of critical importance.

Within the conservancy is a 400 hectare area set aside as the game reserve, home to a dozen or more species of native African wildlife and over 150 species of birds. The long term goal is for the game reserve is to expand to incorporate the entire conservancy.

Volunteers will assist in the rehabilitation of birds and small mammals, and maintain the surrounding habitat into which they can be released. On the program, volunteers will become involved in environmental work and wildlife rehabilitation and care, as well as learning about conservation principles and veld and game management. Volunteers with specialist experience or qualifications may be able to assist in the project’s intensive care clinic.
