We are pleased to announce that our Honduras program has two new projects available. Volunteers now have the chance to work on conservation projects with manatees and iguanas.
Manatee Project
On this project volunteers will work at a reserve dedicated to the conservation of the endangered Manatee. The refuge is located on the Caribbean coast around 35 kilometres from the port town of La Ceiba. The foundation of the refuge came to be as a direct response to the depleting number of Manatees within the zone. Manatees are an endangered species and up to 10% of the total global population can be found within this reserve. In addition, the refuge is also home to a vast number of different species of birds, over 200 in total, and a plethora of other animals and reptiles such as White-faced monkeys, Jaguars, Howlers, Boa Constrictors, Crocodiles, Alligators, Iguanas and a vast array of fish life.

Global Volunteer Network is excited to offer two new programs in Honduras.
Conservation in La Tigra National Park
La Tigra is located only 25 kilometres from Tegucigalpa and encompasses a beautiful cloud forest covering 23, 571 hectares. Cloud forests are considered one of the richest habitats in the world, hosting a huge variety of flora and fauna. La Tigra was the first protected area to be established in Honduras and was declared a National Park in 1980. The proximity of the park to mining operations meant that La Tigra was exposed to deforestation from around 1900 to until the 1950s. In spite of this La Tigra has recovered into a healthy forest which needs volunteers to help maintain and preserve its unique habitat.
Volunteers will work on various activities including reforestation; elimination of diseased trees; path clearance and maintenance; seed potting and nursery work; creating inventories of the flora and fauna; and building and restoring colonial buildings within the park. Volunteers may sign up to start in July 2007 for a maximum of 4 weeks.
GVN’s Honduras program, located in rural communities in the Central American country of Honduras, has three new programs available, which join our existing projects, building and teaching English. These are:
Orphanage Project: Volunteers will help with the 16 children aged from 4 to 8 years old living at an orphanage in the Valle de Angles region of Honduras.
Soccer Project: Volunteers will work with a Youth Soccer Centre as a volunteer coach for children from the surrounding villages.
Medical Project: This project allows volunteers with experience and/or qualifications in medicine to help at the La Esperanza Hospital. Volunteers will participate in many of the roles associated with shadowing nurses and doctors, laboratory work, pre-natal, intensive care, physiotherapy and more.
