Simon Hart 's Profile

Kenya Program Advisor

Simon has spent several years trotting over the globe, starting with a six month stay in a Kenyan village back in 2003, teaching in a local school. Since catching the travelling bug he has volunteered with GVN in Ghana, working with the HIV education team and microfinance team. He was so impressed he then went away with GVN again, this time to Nepal where he worked in an orphanage as well as teaching English to Nepalese and Tibetan monks. He has recently completed his MA in Development Studies, however refused to give up on the travelling dream. After spending a year in the head office in Wellington, New Zealand, Simon is back where he belongs.. in Kenya!

An Interview with Simon Hart

When people ask you 'where are you from' what is your reply:

The sunny south of the UK, in a small town called Poole.

When people ask 'where do you work' what's your response:

Wonderful Nairobi, Kenya!

When people then ask 'and what do you do at GVN', what it your reply:

I work as the GVN representative in Kenya, helping volunteers settle into their programs and helping with the redistribution trips.

Why did you end up working at GVN?:

After two amazing volunteer stints with them, it seemed the logical choice. After spending some time in the head office, I was lucky enough to be offered this opportunity.

What's the best thing about working for GVN?

Working with like-minded people from all over the globe.

When you're not at work, what's your favourite activity?

Reading everything and anything, football, running, keeping up to date with global affairs and dreaming of where in the world to visit next!

What's your favourite food?

Lebanese and Mexican, any kind of cheese and a special dish called 'Bean mountain' (not for the faint hearted).

If you could be animal, what would it be?

Velociraptor... elegant but deadly.

If you could go anywhere just now, where would it be?

Nigeria, Sudan, North Korea, Iran or India.

Who are your favourite bands/musicians?

If I'm being honest I would say Salif Keita, Amadou & Mariam and a bit of Tracy Chapman... when I'm being really honest I would say Justin Timberlake and Lady Gaga.
