Libby Gendall 's Profile

Volunteer Coordinator, Africa

Libby is a proud Kiwi, born-and-bred in Wellington... or so she claims. Her 18 years growing up in the small town of Palmerston North say differently! Her studies at Victoria University in history and international relations sparked an interest in developing countries. This interest became a passion when she spent 5 months volunteering through GVN with orphaned children in Nepal. This life-changing experience taught Libby the real difference a volunteer can make within a community and since then, she's been hooked! When not hanging out at the GVN office, Libby can often be found doing one of her 2 favourite things - dancing (anything from belly dancing to hip hop) and eating (preferably pizza - a possible result of 5 months spent eating nothing but rice and lentils!)

An Interview with Libby Gendall

When people ask you 'where are you from' what is your reply:

Beautiful Wellington! Best city in the world!

When people ask 'where do you work' what's your response:

In the Hutt... at Global Volunteer Network :)

When people then ask 'and what do you do at GVN', what it your reply:

I'm the Volunteer Coordinator for our programs in the Africa. I also try and keep Hannah out of trouble...

Why did you end up working at GVN?:

My first experience with GVN was as a volunteer. After spending 5 months working at an orphanage in Nepal, I was hooked! I knew this was a job where I could really make a difference, and have fun doing it.

What's the best thing about working for GVN?

The people! We have a lot of fun and laughs here in the office :) It's also great to work for an organisation that shares my values.

When you're not at work, what's your favourite activity?

Going out dancing with my friends, spending time outdoors in the sunshine, being by the sea, and I'm a serious movie addict!

What's your favourite food?

Food: bread... simple, but delicious. It was what i missed most in Nepal. And drink: mojitos! yummmm so refreshing!

If you could be animal, what would it be?

If i were an animal I'd be a cat, not very original, but imagine if chasing your own tail and lying in the sun was all it took to make you happy!

If you could go anywhere just now, where would it be?

Tibet, it's the most inspiring, beautiful, sad and thought-provoking place I've ever been. I'd love to go back there. On the other hand, Vegas would be awesome too!

Who are your favourite bands/musicians?

Foo Fighters, Chillis, Oasis, Shihad, Kora... and pretty much anything I can dance/sing to.
