Lea Schmitz 's Profile

Program Specialist

Lea SchmitzLea is originally from Germany and moved to New Zealand in 2009. She gained a degree in Development Studies and International Relations at the university in Wellington and has declared New Zealand as her new home. Growing up in a family of passionate adventure travellers, Lea has already visited a variety of countries, but does not plan to retire from travelling any time soon. While travelling, Lea loves trying local cuisines and she likes to get insight into foreign customs and cultures, particularly in small rural communities.

An Interview with Lea Schmitz

When people ask you 'where are you from' what is your reply:

I was born and raised in Germany, but when someone asks me today I would answer 'Wellington'.

When people ask 'where do you work' what's your response:

Global Volunteer Network.

When people then ask 'and what do you do at GVN', what it your reply:

I am a Program Specialist and support people all over the world to help where help is needed the most.

Why did you end up working at GVN?:

After graduating from university, I was looking for a job where I could use my degree in Development Studies and luckily I found GVN, who gave me the opportunity to work in the field where my passion lies.

What's the best thing about working for GVN?

Helping good people to do good deeds.

When you're not at work, what's your favourite activity?

I like to explore the Wellington region, cooking, fishing, and to create travel plans for the near and distant future.

What's your favourite food?

I love Cambodian fusion food, but also Thai and Malaysian - really 'curry' is the answer!

If you could be animal, what would it be?

I'd be a polar bear.

If you could go anywhere just now, where would it be?

I'd go to Rarotonga for a swim and breakfast, to Tibet for some hiking and lunch, and to Germany to see my family and friends for dinner.

Who are your favourite bands/musicians?

I listen to music from the 60s, like the Beatles or Aretha Franklin, and local bands from my hometown, like Day Out.
