Graham Fyfe's Profile

Graham FyfeGraham is responsible for Global Volunteer Network's internal administration areas. Graham has a Bachelor of Arts in History and a Bachelor of Commerce and Administration from Victoria University in Wellington, and his previous job experience includes working as a fish salesman and as a music reviewer. He's always open to discussion about the finer points of Anglo-centric sports such as rugby union and cricket or obscure musical genres like progressive rock or British folk-rock.

An Interview with Graham Fyfe

When people ask you 'where are you from' what is your reply:

Naenae. Represent.

When people ask 'where do you work' what's your response:

Quite often I end up saying something like "I work at a place that places volunteers in overseas places" (I'm often awkward with strangers).

When people then ask 'and what do you do at GVN', what it your reply:

I'm the "Systems Analyst". It means I do lots of bits and pieces, including accounting, IT, and forecasting/projections.

Why did you end up working at GVN?:

I finished University and didn't know what to do next, and Colin had just started GVN and needed employees.

What's the best thing about working for GVN?

We're doing something worthwhile, and it's a nice group of people. Also, people play table tennis with me.

When you're not at work, what's your favourite activity?

When I'm not at work, I'm often pretending to be a musician, doing home renovation or gardening, tramping, playing board games, or trying to be enthusiastic about the New Zealand cricket team.

What's your favourite food?

I'm easy to please, enjoying relatively simple food-stuffs like crunchy peanut butter or dried fruit.

If you could be animal, what would it be?

I identify with goats, as I'm unkempt, often have a beard, and not too fussy about what I eat.

If you could go anywhere just now, where would it be?

My wife wants to go to Paris, so I'd take her there.

Who are your favourite bands/musicians?

If this wasn't during work time, I could probably produce a ranked list of my favourite fifty bands/musicians, with a synopsis of their career arc and their key works, but a list of my very favourite bands/musicians includes The Replacements, Yes, The Beach Boys, The Go-Betweens, Joni Mitchell, The Hold Steady, Stevie Wonder, The Decemberists, Sigur Ros, and Husker Du.
