An Interview with Erin Courtenay

When people ask you 'where are you from' what is your reply:

Sydney! Proud to be an Aussie living in Kiwiland.

When people ask 'where do you work' what's your response:

Global Volunteer Network - we arrange volunteer projects in developing countries around the world. (Followed by a more detailed explanation as people are normally interested!)

When people then ask 'and what do you do at GVN', what it your reply:

I look after the marketing and communications side of things. I love being able to talk to people about what we do, what their options are and encouraging them to get involved.

Why did you end up working at GVN?:

I volunteered with GVN in the Vietnam orphanage program in April 2007. I had such an amazing experience and knew that this was something I wanted to commit myself to. I came back and started looking for a job in this type of organisation. Luckily GVN were hiring and I got my initial job as Asia Programs Coordinator.

What's the best thing about working for GVN?

Hearing all the inspiring, motivating and heart lifting stories of our partners and volunteers. Talking to so many people who are passionate about helping people in need.

When you're not at work, what's your favourite activity?

Netball! Walking our dog Indy. Eating good food.

What's your favourite food?

Pasta, I could eat it every day. Oh and ditto for chocolate!

If you could be animal, what would it be?

A dog. Playing fetch, going for walks, getting a pat or cuddle, and the simple fact that everything is your favourite thing! Now that's the life.

If you could go anywhere just now, where would it be?

I's have to pick 2 places. I'd go back to Vietnam to see how the project has developed, to visit old friends and see how much the goregous little kids have grown. As a personal challenge I'd go and do the Everest Base Camp trek. Such an achievement and such spectacular scenery.

Who are your favourite bands/musicians?

Kings of Leon, Matchbox 20 (their original album), Jack Johnson, Sublime and a mix of modern pop on the radio.
